Anatomical description

O

ur spinal cord consists of bones and soft, spongy discs. There is a kind of jelly-liquid between the hardest bones which forms a “cushions”, which  prevents the bones to rub against each. When we remain seated for a long time, the jelly is squeezed either forward or backward. The “cushion” is no longer well aligned. Once this happens, the discs will swell and hurt.

If the swelling pushes a nerve, then the pain will become worse. Due to the lack of exercise and stretching, the muscles become stiffer and less flexible. When the tendons are tight, the muscles of the lower back are compressed, because they need to support the tendons to keep our back straight. This constant stressful effort causes lower back pain.

When someone remains lying for a long time, the lower back pain increases.  It is known that we are all taller in the morning, compared to when we go to sleep in the evening. This is due to the spine cord discs. The discs between the vertebraes are filled with highly concentrated protein chains. While lying down, the trays are filled with fluid and gently push the vertebraes away from each other, lengthening the spine. This is the reason why the spine is often stiff in the morning, it is because the discs are so full of fluid. When we get up the spine resumes its vertical position, and because of the gravity, the fluid from each disc begins to leak.

How to deal with lower back pain  – Exercise

Yoga and pilates are great ways to relieve lower back pain. However, daily workout sessions in the gym may increase the pain, if we burden our spine with inappropriate exercises. The injury may get even more serious when combined with daily prolonged sitting, and this is often the case with back pain!
