Fit ball – Core Stability

The effect of trunk stabilization exercises with a Swiss ball on core muscle activation in the elderly

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of trunk stabilization exercise on the muscle. Electromyography activations related to core stability.

Subjects and Methods

Fifteen (15) elderly people in a geriatric hospital performed trunk stabilization exercises with a Swissball for 20 minutes five times per week for 8 weeks. Trunk muscle activations were measured using electromyography before and after the intervention.

Results of exercises with a Fit ball

After the intervention, the muscle activations of the rectus abdominis, erector spinae, lateral low-back (quadratus lumborum and external oblique), and gluteus medius muscles increased significantly.

Active sitting is a new trend

It is currently discussed based on extensive research which shows many benefits.

Sitting in front of a desk for many hours everyday is the usual routine for many people. Although this cannot be avoided. It is detrimental for our body.

Humans were not intended to be spending most of their lives in offices in front of computer screens.  The human body was not designed to be sitting for such extensive periods of time.

Extensive sitting creates burden for our back which results in weakening of the addominal and core muscles and in stiffness of the lower back and pain.
